In 1986, bassist/cellist Eric Kartchner (Jeroth) co-founded a Salt Lake City punk band called, 'Chipmunks Go Punk' with Poet Steven Grames. The band lasted seven years and recorded a whopping 23 albums, only one of which was ever released publicly. While Steven and Eric were ever the constant forces behind the band, various friends and musicians participated throughout those years, providing for an ever-changing and evolving sound. domestic responsibilities weighing down on the threesome, working together had become a virtual impossibility. In 1990, singer/songwriter Laura Larsen joined the group and, that same year, became Steven’s wife. By 1993, with Chipmunks Go Punk recorded their final album in July of 1993, in the absence of Laura, who had already quit the band to concentrate on having her first child. The remaining duo played one last live show under the name 'CreatureHouse' that August. Steven and Eric then decided to disband, citing the usual "creative differences". The two had grown up and away from this once fundamental venture, as well as from each other. Eric followed his own path down the electronic superhighway, releasing a keyboard-based album under the name 'Moonage Daydream'. (Named after the David Bowie song), called “Spy in the City of Salt” in early 2001 An accomplished cellist, he teaches cello and continues to write and record on his own. |
